Grant Wish List

The grant wish list is a simple listing of any granting needs from area nonprofits that are served by the Community Foundation.  Submissions to be included are accepted at any time and will be added to the list as we receive them.  This list can be especially helpful for our donor advisors so that they can see what immediate needs there are in our community that align with their interests.  Not only is this list available to the public here on our website, but we also directly share it with our donor advisors and with local media.  Our goal is to help as many nonprofits secure the funding that they need to meet their mission and goals.

More information about each organization can be found by clicking on their name, which will link you to their website.

Allegheny Conference on Community Development
Requesting: Any Amount

As you are likely aware, the Pittsburgh Public Schools announced that as of April 16, they will begin remote, at-home instruction for students.  We applaud the actions being taken to keep our students moving on their educational trajectories.  However, this poses a serious issue for the families who do not have access to the needed technological devices or internet.  We need to level the playing field and w are asking if you can help.

The Pittsburgh Public Schools are conducting a family technology survey.  Fifty-two percent of families representing 12,040 children have responded.  Of those surveyed, 4,591 said they need a device and 700 families identified that they need an internet "hot spot".  With 48% yet to respond, we can anticipate that the number of devices needed is more than double, putting the total need at approximately 7,500 computers.

We know there is a desire across the community to step up and help.  If you have new devices that you would like to donate, or to make a financial contribution, please contact superintendentsoffice@pghschools.org.  For those who prefer to donate to a district outside of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, please contact us at COVIDResponse@pittsburghregion.org and we will connect you with the appropriate partner.

Minimum specs for new devices:
The district currently uses the Dell Latitude 3190 with the following specs:

  • Intel Celeron N4100 Processor (Quad Core, up to 2.4GHz)
  • Windows 10 Pro 64bit
  • 4GB 2400MHz LPDDR4 RAM
  • 64 GB Hard Drive
  • Dual Band Wireless (802.11ac)
  • 11.6'' HD Anti-Glare Non-Touch Display (1366x768) w Camera & Microphone

Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company
Requesting: $5,200

The Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company provides emergency services, including water rescue.  We are a primary responder for the Kiski River from Parks Township through Gilpin Township and Leechurg Borough to entry point in the Allegheny River at Schenley, PA.  We also provide primary water rescue coverage along the Allegheny River from Schenley to approximately Kelley Station as well to parts of the Crooked Creek Watershed areas.  Currently our water rescue team is down to one rescue boat for river response as our Kodiak Swift Water Rescue Boat was damaged last year and is now operational only in a very limited capacity.  Last summer the need for continued and expanded water rescue capabilities became very apparent as the LVFC team had two separate rescue responses within hours of each other for recreational kayakers trapped in the waters of the Kiski River. Five individuals were safely rescued that day.  The Kiski River is becoming a significant kayak, canoe and fishing attraction bringing hundreds of visitors to the communities along the river.  That is in addition to the hundreds that come to enjoy the campground and water activities along the Allegheny.  As this influx grows, the need for additional safety teams and equipment grows as well.  The cost to replace the Kodiak rescue boat is approximately $5,200.

Reagan's Journey
Requesting: $250

Our organization serves families that have children with often very complex medical needs.  They rely on our Lending Closet for life-sustaining items like respiratory or feeding tube items that either insurance does not cover or does not provide enough to sustain their needs.  Unfortunately we are presented with the reality that a child has passed away due to the complexity of their diagnosis.  Those same families that receive critical items now are given the opportunity to turn around and donate their child's unused equipment and supplies back to the Lending Closet to help another family.  When this happens, we feel so grateful that they have chosen to donate these precious items, but also helpless to take away the pain they are experiencing.  this has caused us to search for a comfort gift that could be given only to families that have experienced the loss of their loved one.  We have found an organization that creates blankets with fabrics that are uniquely comforting.  They are also a nonprofit organization with their own mission to provide comfort.  It's our hope to join forces with them and purchase 10 blankets at $25 each to offer to our grieving families.  This is our chance to stand alongside them just as we always had when meeting their children's unique and critical needs.  Our mission is to make life better for children with special needs.  When we can n longer do that in our capacity, we make life better for the mom, dad, sister, brother, and grandparents that are left with the broken heart.  Please help us to offer comfort in the midst of chaos.

Social Studies Dept. at West Shamokin High School
Requesting: $5,000

As the American Government teacher, I am gravely concerned that our students no long see public service or public servants as an admirable field or as admirable people.  This project would be multi-faceted, as 100 copies of John F. Kennedy's Profiles of Courage will be purchased with the intent of them being read by my Government students as part of the established curriculum.  In addition to the 100 copies or Profiles in Courage, additional biographies and autobiographies will be purchased to provide newer and more relevant examples of elected officials who bring respect to the offices in which they hold by the work that they do.  The good that people do is so very often covered up by the divisive politics of the day, and this project would afford us an opportunity to present the good work that people do.

The Challenge Program, Inc.
Requesting: $10,000

The Challenge Program, Inc. (TCP) contributes to workforce and economic development by connecting business and education to achieve a common objective: the development of a skilled and motivated future workforce.  TCP carries out its mission through in-school assemblies and ceremonies, workforce development activities, and continuous communication between businesses, educators, students.  Currently, we partner with two high schools in Armstrong County: Apollo-Ridge and Freeport, but we hope to expand into the remaining three districts and Lenape Career and Tech Center.  Apollo-Ridge and Freeport are sponsored by business partner Quality Life Services (QLS), a regional senior care provider.  Students learn about careers in healthcare during assemblies and tours conducted during the school year.  Business partnership at the base level covers half the cost of our program; we fund-raise the other half through grant and foundation funding and various other fundraising efforts.  Our goal is for all students in Armstrong County to benefit from career awareness resulting in students finding employment in their own area and becoming contributing members of Armstrong County.  All of this is made possible by the public-private partnerships facilitated by TCP.  In order to expand in Armstrong County and beyond, we're looking to secure the funding needed to continue our mission.  Our vision is every student has the opportunity for financial security through rewarding careers.

Urban Rural Action
Requesting: $5,000

Urban Rural Action is organizing four two-day "Democracy Renewal 2020" summits across Pennsylvania.  The goal of these non-partisan summits is to promote more constructive civic engagement across geographic and ideological divides.  In support of the Armstrong County Community Foundation's Community/Civic Affairs priority, we are proposing to hold one of our four Friday & Saturday summits in Armstrong County (Kittanning).  The Democracy Renewal 2020 summit would bring together 50-100 residents of Armstrong County, Allegheny County, and neighboring counties to do three things:

1. Produce consensus public statements that promote collaboration, healthy discourse, and civic engagement among voters from all parties and unaffiliated voters.

2. Design urban/rural community action projects.

3. Build relationships among people across different communities through shared meals, collaboration, and an optional home-stay should any Kittanning residents want to host a participant from a visiting community Friday night.

We are requesting funding to cover expenses including food and drink, transportation, community projects and compensation for facilitators.
